More Christmas cards are sent than any other type of greeting card — around one billion in the UK alone each year. The majority of them say some version of the same three things: Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, hope you are well.

Which is fine. But it is also an opportunity missed. A Christmas card that says one specific, true thing about the person receiving it — or about the year you shared — will stand out from every other envelope on the mantelpiece.

The one thing that makes a Christmas card memorable

Reference the year. A specific detail about what has happened — what they achieved, what you shared, what changed — turns a seasonal greeting into something that actually means something. "Merry Christmas" is nice. "Merry Christmas — this year watching you do X has been one of my favourite things" is a card people keep.

Tip

Write something about the year, not just the season. It is the difference between a card that gets glanced at and one that gets read twice.
