Get well cards sit in a strange space. They are meant to comfort, but they can easily tip into minimising. They are meant to be positive, but forced cheerfulness can feel hollow to someone who is genuinely unwell.

The stakes vary enormously too. A card for a colleague who has had their appendix out is very different from a card for a friend who has just been diagnosed with something serious. The approach needs to match the situation.

What to avoid

"You will be back on your feet in no time" — you do not know that. "Everything happens for a reason" — it does not help and often is not believed. "Stay positive!" — this puts the burden of their recovery on their attitude, which is unfair.

Avoid making promises about outcomes you cannot guarantee. Avoid minimising how hard the experience is. And avoid making their illness about you — "I cannot imagine how you feel" is fine; a paragraph about your own health history is not.

Tip

The most comforting get well messages do one thing: make the person feel less alone in what they are going through. Focus on presence, not prognosis.

For a serious illness or long-term diagnosis

This is the hardest category to write for. Do not pretend to know the outcome. Do not offer silver linings. Simply be present.

I do not have the right words. I just want you to know I am here, I am thinking of you, and I am not going anywhere.

This is hard news and I am not going to pretend otherwise. I am just so glad you told me — and I am here for whatever comes next.

For mental health struggles

Mental illness deserves the same compassion as physical illness — and the same care with language. Avoid advice, avoid toxic positivity, and resist the urge to compare or relate. Just show up.

I am not going to offer advice or silver linings. I just want you to know I see you, I care about you, and I am here.
