Sometimes someone you care about is going through something hard — not a bereavement, not a medical emergency, but something real and painful all the same. A job loss. A divorce. A burnout. A diagnosis. A period of depression or anxiety. A relationship breakdown.

These situations are often the ones where people most want to reach out and least know how. The result is that people say nothing — not because they do not care, but because they do not know what to say. And the person going through the hard time feels invisible.

A card changes that. It does not need to fix anything. It just needs to say: I see you, I am here, I am not going anywhere.

What not to say

"Everything happens for a reason." "This will make you stronger." "Think positive." "At least..." These phrases all, in different ways, ask the person to reframe their suffering as something else. They do not need to reframe it. They need to feel that someone sees it.

Avoid giving advice unless asked. Avoid comparing their experience to your own. Avoid making implicit suggestions about how they should feel or what they should do.

Tip

The most powerful thing you can say to someone going through something hard is simply: I am here. I mean it. I am not going anywhere. Say that, and mean it.

For job loss or redundancy

Job loss affects identity, routine, and financial security all at once. The card should acknowledge the difficulty without offering premature optimism.

This is genuinely hard news and I am not going to pretend otherwise. I am thinking of you and I am here for whatever comes next.

Losing a job is never just about the job — I know that. I am here whenever you want to talk, or not talk.

Whatever comes next, it will not define you the way this feels like it does right now. You have got more in you than any job title. I am here.

Use this message →

I know this is a really difficult time. I just wanted you to know you are not going through it alone.

Use this message →

This is rubbish news and you have every right to feel however you feel about it. I am in your corner.

For divorce or relationship breakdown

The end of a significant relationship is a loss — of a person, a future, a shared life. Do not tell them they are better off. Do not take sides unless asked. Simply be present.

I am so sorry you are going through this. It is a real loss and it is okay to grieve it. I am here.

Whatever you need — to talk, to not talk, to have someone sit with you — I am available. Just say the word.

This is one of the hardest things to go through and you do not have to go through it alone. I am here.

You are going to be okay — not immediately, not easily, but eventually. And I will be here for all of it.

I am not going to tell you how to feel or what to do next. I am just going to tell you I am here.

For burnout or exhaustion

Burnout is real and often invisible to others. A card that acknowledges it without minimising it can mean a great deal to someone who feels like they have been running on empty.

I can see how hard you have been pushing. Please rest. You deserve it and you are allowed it.

You have been carrying a lot. I just wanted to say: I see it, I admire it, and I think you should be gentler with yourself.

Burnout is not weakness — it is what happens when someone gives too much for too long. I hope you can slow down. I am here.

You do not have to be okay right now. Just let people who care about you stay close. I am one of them.

Rest. The world will wait. I am here whenever you resurface.

For mental health struggles

I am not going to offer advice or silver linings. I just want you to know I see you and I care about you.

What you are going through is real and hard, and you do not have to minimise it for anyone — including me. I am here.

No pressure, no expectations — just someone who cares about you, in your corner, whenever you need.

For a general difficult time

Sometimes you know someone is struggling but not exactly with what. A card that simply acknowledges difficulty without naming it can be exactly the right thing.

I know things have been hard lately. I just wanted you to know I am thinking of you.

You do not have to share the details. I just wanted you to know someone is in your corner.
